World Environment Day 2025: WISE and Judeen International School Unite to Beat Plastic Pollution

On June 5th, 2025, in celebration of World Environment Day, the Women Initiative for Sustainable Environment (WISE) partnered with Judeen International School, Mando, Kaduna, to raise vital awareness about plastic pollution and inspire a new generation of environmental stewards.

This year’s theme, “Beat Plastic Pollution,” underscores the urgent need for global, national, and local action to combat the escalating crisis caused by plastic waste. Representing our Executive Director, Mrs. Olanike Olugboji-Daramola, our Business Development Trainer, Mrs. Lilian Ugwa, addressed the students, staff, and community with a passionate call to action.

“How can we use a plastic item produced after many hours of work and then dispose of it immediately?”

Mrs. Olugboji-Daramola’s message was clear: Plastic pollution is not just an eyesore—it’s a threat to ecosystems, biodiversity, human health, and climate stability. Despite the convenience and economic importance of plastics, particularly single-use plastics, their improper disposal has become a global crisis.

She emphasized that recycling alone is not enough. Instead, we must reduce, redesign, and rethink how we produce and consume plastic products. More importantly, she urged individuals, communities, governments, and industries to act decisively by adopting innovative waste disposal strategies, eco-conscious lifestyles, and infrastructural improvements.

Leading by ExampleTo inspire change, WISE encouraged Judeen School to consider implementing a ‘No Plastic Policy’—a bold but necessary step toward environmental sustainability. From switching to reusable bottles, lunch boxes, and cups to completely banning single-use plastics on school premises, this initiative can set a precedent for other institutions.

“We must consider the life cycle of every plastic item we encounter. Our carelessness could have far-reaching consequences for humanity, wildlife, and the environment.”

Planting for the Planet

As part of the celebration, students and staff participated in tree planting activities, with two almond trees strategically planted on the school compound. These actions symbolized growth, resilience, and our shared commitment to a greener, cleaner future. WISE also donated a waste bin to the school to promote proper waste management practices.

An Inspired Future

The principal of Judeen International School expressed heartfelt appreciation for the collaboration with WISE, praising the organization for its consistent advocacy and impact.

“Our students will now learn the importance of environmental cleanliness and teach their parents and friends,” he remarked. Zero Plastic is the New Cool

The event was more than just a celebration—it was a declaration. A declaration that change begins with awareness, action, and accountability. WISE is proud to stand alongside institutions like Judeen International School, nurturing young minds who will carry forward the banner of environmental justice and sustainability.

As we reflect on this year’s World Environment Day, we are reminded that the fight against plastic pollution begins with each of us. Together, we can lead, educate, and transform our communities—one tree, one bottle, one habit at a time.Happy World Environment Day! 🌱
