WISE Launches Tree Planting Intervention in Lere LGA to Combat Deforestation and Promote Regenerative Agriculture

Trees—often called the lungs of the Earth—are rapidly disappearing due to relentless human activities, particularly deforestation. Without urgent intervention, we risk a future where our children may only learn about trees from books rather than experiencing their shade, beauty, and benefits firsthand.

In response to this growing environmental crisis, the Women Initiative for Sustainable Environment (WISE), led by its Founding Director, Mrs. Olanike Olugboji-Daramola, has launched a Tree Planting Intervention in Lere Local Government Area (LGA) of Kaduna State.

This bold step is part of WISE’s Regenerative Agriculture Accelerator, a program designed to empower women farmers with climate-smart agricultural practices while promoting ecosystem restoration.

The initiative was officially flagged off in a warm and collaborative event hosted by the Lere LGA leadership.

Representing the Chairman, Alhaji Jafaru, was the Vice-Chairperson, Dr. Kalen Ephraim Audu. The event also welcomed key stakeholders including:

  • Dr. Shehu Aliyu – WASH Coordinator
  • Gidado Alhassan Muhammed – Education Secretary
  • Shehu Yusuf – Director of Administration and Finance
  • Mrs. Alice – Head of Health
  • Mr. Nicholas – Representative from UNICEF

During the flag-off, 10 symbolic trees were planted at the Central Model School, Lere. An additional 290 trees will be distributed across the LGA, with the responsibility of nurturing them entrusted to local schools and communities.

This shared stewardship underscores a long-term commitment to climate resilience, biodiversity conservation, and sustainable agriculture.

This intervention goes beyond tree planting—it integrates organic farming practices, improves food systems and security, facilitates access to finance and green technology, and ultimately promotes a healthier planet.

We extend our heartfelt appreciation to Madam Ladi Makawa Bonat and Madam Rifkatu Yakubu Bago Bawa, two remarkable eco-champions whose tireless efforts helped make this vision a reality in Lere LGA.

At WISE, we are not just planting trees—we are sowing hope, restoring ecosystems, and shaping a greener, more sustainable future.
