Stitching Change: How One WISE Leader Turned Textile Waste into Inspiration on World Cleanup Day

This year’s World Cleanup Day carried the theme “Textile and Fashion Waste.” It was both inspiring and empowering to see people around the world take action in creative ways to tackle one of today’s fastest-growing environmental challenges.

Among those leading by example was Mrs. Cristiana Oche, one of the passionate women leaders of the Women Initiative for Sustainable Environment (WISE). Instead of organizing a large outdoor cleanup, she chose to make an impact right within her community — at a local tailor’s shop.

When Mrs. Oche arrived, the floor was covered with fabric scraps, old clothes, and thread pieces. Without hesitation, she picked up a broom and began to clean.

“World Cleanup Day is not about size; it’s about impact,” she said as she swept the shop floor.

She explained that even small spaces like a tailor’s shop can contribute to the growing problem of textile pollution — but they can also be part of the solution.

Rather than throwing the scraps away, she offered creative and practical ideas:

  • Reuse small pieces by stuffing them into cloth wraps to make cushions.
  • Sew larger scraps into colourful, reusable shopping bags.
  • Adopt sustainable practices, such as cutting patterns efficiently, choosing eco-friendly fabrics, or selling leftover materials to recycling groups that turn them into mats or insulation products.

By the time she finished, the shop was spotless — and more importantly, the people around her were inspired. Mrs. Oche reminded everyone that cleaning our streets is beneficial, but addressing the habits that create waste is even more effective.

On World Cleanup Day 2025, Mrs. Cristiana Oche didn’t just sweep a tailor’s shop — she stitched a new story of change and sustainability.

“Even a simple tailor’s shop can spark change,” she said. “If we all start small, we can make a big difference.”
