On July 15th, 2025, the hills of Lere Local Government Area witnessed a powerful moment of environmental and community awakening. The Women Initiative for Sustainable Environment (WISE) returned to Kudaru Chiefdom, not just to plant trees, but to sow seeds of hope, resilience, and transformation.
Arriving with 100 Neem and Tamarind tree seedlings, WISE brought with it far more than greenery. We came with a vision—to inspire a grassroots movement where communities take ownership of their land, restore their environment, and drive sustainable change from within.
In a deeply symbolic gesture, His Royal Highness, Bugwam Kudaru, Mr. Yakubu Iliya Sauri, joined hands with the WISE team and village leaders, planting a seedling in the heart of his community. His presence, along with the endorsement of local village heads, signified a vital truth: when traditional leadership aligns with grassroots action, the potential for transformation becomes limitless.
At the core of this initiative are the women of Kudaru. These remarkable women, resilient and full of purpose, have stepped into a new role; not just as caretakers of the home, but as eco guardians of their land. They have been entrusted with nurturing the newly planted trees and will receive training to raise their own tree nurseries. Once additional land is secured, they will lead the expansion of this green mission, overseeing the growth and well-being of thousands more trees.
What unfolded in Kudaru on that sunlit day was not simply a project—it was the birth of a movement. One tree at a time. One woman at a time. One promise at a time.
As we look ahead, WISE remains committed to empowering women, restoring degraded lands, and building climate-resilient communities—starting with small actions that ripple into lasting impact.
Together, we are planting more than trees.
We are restoring hope. We are growing a legacy.
