Africa’s Call to Action
On September 20th, 2024, the world unites for another global effort to combat waste and pollution as part of “World Clean Up Day” , with the theme: “Arctic Cities and Marine Litter.” While Africa may be geographically distant from the Arctic, we share the responsibility for the health of our oceans, rivers, and coastlines. Marine litter knows no borders, and the plastic pollution from cities, rivers, and coastal communities in Africa contributes to the growing crisis impacting marine life around the globe.
AFRICA’S ROLE IN THE FIGHT AGAINST MARINE LITTER
Africa’s cities and coastal areas are experiencing rapid urbanization, leading to increased waste generation and mismanaged plastic disposal. With an estimated 8 million tons of plastic waste entering the oceans each year, much of this waste travels through rivers, reaching distant shores. As litter accumulates, it not only threatens marine ecosystems but also endangers communities reliant on fishing and clean water resources.
The impact of plastic pollution is devastating. Marine wildlife, from fish to seabirds, are ingesting plastic waste, leading to malnutrition, reproductive problems, and death. Local economies dependent on fishing and tourism are suffering as polluted waters deter investment and livelihood opportunities. Human health risks are growing, as microplastics enter the food chain, impacting the water and seafood consumed by people worldwide.
THE CALL TO ACTION FOR AFRICA
This World Clean Up Day, let’s focus on “Africa’s coastal cities, rivers, and communities”, where we have the power to make a difference. By reducing waste, implementing sustainable practices, and actively cleaning up our environments, we can curb marine litter at its source.
HOW CAN YOU HELP?
I) Participate in Clean-Up Event: Join local clean-up efforts in your community, especially in rivers, coastal areas, and urban centers. Every action counts.
II) Reduce Single-Use Plastics: Avoid single-use plastics like bags, bottles, and straws. Opt for reusable alternatives.
III) Educate and Inspire: Raise awareness about the importance of protecting our oceans and coastal regions from plastic pollution.
IV) Support Global Initiatives: Advocate for stronger waste management policies and international cooperation to tackle marine litter.
As Africa rises to meet this global challenge, let us take pride in our efforts to safeguard not only our environment but also contribute to the protection of far-reaching ecosystems like the Arctic. Together, we can make waves of change and ensure a cleaner, healthier future for all.
