The International Women’s Day (IWD) 2025 celebration organized by the Women Initiative for Sustainable Environment (WISE) on March 15th was a day filled with energy, inspiration, and purpose. The event brought together women from various communities, partners, and stakeholders, all united in the mission of empowering women and promoting sustainable development.
Women arrived dressed in vibrant purple and white, the signature colors of IWD, symbolizing justice and dignity. Group leaders ensured a smooth arrival process, guiding participants to the accreditation desk, where they received their wristbands. Volunteers worked tirelessly to assist attendees, making sure every woman felt welcomed and valued.
The event officially commenced with an opening address by WISE’s Executive Director, Olanike Olugboji-Daramola, who emphasized the power of women in driving change. She highlighted the importance of women’s participation in climate action, economic empowerment, and leadership, reinforcing WISE’s commitment to equipping women with the tools and opportunities needed to thrive. She underscored that true empowerment goes beyond individual success—it requires collective action, advocacy, peacebuilding, and environmental stewardship.
Attendees expressed their hope and confidence in a brighter future, acknowledging WISE’s impactful efforts in empowering women and fostering positive change in their communities. Speaking on behalf of the wife of the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hajiya Hussaina Abbas-Tajuddeen, Bakiyya Abubakar reaffirmed her dedication to advancing women’s empowerment. She commended WISE for its unwavering efforts in promoting peace, unity, and progress among women, emphasizing the importance of collective action in driving sustainable change.
Mrs. Esther Oyeniyan of Barnawa Baraka Women described the event as a perfect blend of engagement, enlightenment, and empowerment. She shared that the program opened her eyes to the immense benefits of adopting an eco-friendly lifestyle and expressed her excitement for next year’s edition, eager to learn and contribute even more.
