Today, October 7, 2024, the global community marks World Habitat Day, a time to reflect on the state of our towns and cities and the basic human right to adequate shelter. This year’s theme, “Engaging Youth to Create a Better Urban Future,” highlights the vital role young people play in shaping resilient, inclusive, and sustainable urban spaces.
Urbanization is accelerating, and with more than half of the world’s population living in cities, engaging youth has never been more crucial. As tomorrow’s leaders and innovators, they possess the energy, creativity, and vision to develop solutions for the urban challenges we face today. From affordable housing to green infrastructure, the youth are essential in driving change toward livable, equitable, and environmentally friendly cities.
In line with this year’s theme, WISE (Women Initiative for Sustainable Environment) continues its commitment to engaging youth in various environmental and urban development projects. Through programs like clean cookstove distribution, climate advocacy, and women empowerment initiatives, WISE recognizes the importance of involving young people in the dialogue and action toward sustainable urban living.
By fostering an inclusive environment where young voices are heard and harnessed, WISE is contributing to a future where cities are more livable, equitable, and responsive to the needs of all citizens.
As we observe World Habitat Day, let’s encourage youth engagement in urban planning and sustainability efforts, ensuring their active participation in building cities that work for everyone.
